Illinois - Do I need Responsible Vendor Training?

Hey - so let me guess: you're an owner, manager or employee in the Illinois cannabis industry.

You: Do my team and I need Responsible Vendor Training here in Illinois?

Us: The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (or IDFPR) requires all dispensary employees (including owners, managers, employees, and agents) who are involved in the sale of cannabis or cannabis-infused products to complete the minimum 2-hour Responsible Vendor Training program through a certified provider within 90 days of hiring. Further, the certification is good for 1 year and must be renewed annually (Section 10 of the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act.).

You: Okay, why do I need this training?

Us:

• Short answer: the IDFPR requires at least 2-hours of Responsible Vendor Training every year from a certified trainer.
• Long answer: Responsible Vendor Training allows your team to be educated on the responsible use, laws, regulations, and best practice guidance of handling cannabis to ensure compliance, decreased risk of regulation breach, and safety for both your establishment and your surrounding community. Sounds pretty helpful, no?

You: I believe you...but show us the regulation?

Us: Sure - that's what we live and breathe: "all owners, managers, employees, and agents involved in the handling or sale of cannabis or cannabis-infused product employed by an adult use dispensing organization or medical cannabis dispensing organization as defined in Section 10 of the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act shall attend and successfully complete a Responsible Vendor Program"  (Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act).

You: What's even covered in your training?

You: Is that it? Any other training requirements?

 Us: So, 2-hours of Responsible Vendor Training is required, but in addition to this, your team needs  6 additional hours of training beyond RVT to meet the 8-hour TOTAL training requirement (Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act).
