January 20, 2026
Hey — so let me guess: you’re an owner, manager, or employee in the Illinois cannabis industry.
And you want to know one thing:
And you want to know one thing:
Do my team and I need Responsible Vendor Training in Illinois?
We hear this question all the time from Illinois operators, so let’s walk through it.
---
You: Do my team and I need Responsible Vendor Training here in Illinois?
Us:
Yes — if your role involves the handling or sale of cannabis or cannabis-infused products, Responsible Vendor Training is required.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) requires dispensary owners, managers, employees, and agents in these roles to complete a minimum 2-hour Responsible Vendor Training (RVT) course through a certified provider.
Here’s what that means in practice:
• You must complete RVT within 90 days of hire
• Your certification is valid for 1 year
• RVT must be renewed annually

This requirement is established under Section 10-20 of the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act (CRTA).
You: Okay, why do I need this training?
Us:
At a basic level, because Illinois law says so.
But more importantly, RVT is designed to make sure everyone on your team understands how to operate in a way that protects your license and reduces compliance risk.
RVT focuses on things like:
• How Illinois cannabis rules actually apply on the sales floor
• How to prevent violations before they happen
• How to handle age verification and ID issues correctly
• How to reduce diversion and other common enforcement triggers
In other words, it’s meant to help your business avoid problems — not just react to them.

You: I believe you...but show us the regulation?
Us:
Absolutely. Here’s the statute that makes RVT mandatory in Illinois:
“All owners, managers, employees, and agents involved in the handling or sale of cannabis or cannabis-infused products
employed by an adult-use dispensing organization or medical cannabis dispensing organization
shall attend and successfully complete a Responsible Vendor Program.”
